Under Wisconsin laws, a felony is any crime for which the penalty (sentence) can be one or more years in a state prison. A federal felony carries a sentence of one or more years in a federal prison. In some situations, a sentence for a state misdemeanor can be in excess of one year, but the crime as provided under Wisconsin statutory law will state that the original sentence is one or less years in jail.
Felonies in the state of Wisconsin are classified by letter codes, A - I. A Class A Felony is the most severe type of crime and penalty, and a Class I Felony is the least severe. In all instances, the court may impose prison time, a fine, or both; as well, the court may impose sentencing up to the maximum plus additional time for enhancer's, habitual offenders, and if a juvenile was involved.
